Dwell Richly, Day 53

Today's reading: Luke 10

The Word in today's chapter, which I so often return to, is in the last verse: "one thing is necessary." Like Martha, it's too easy for me to become anxious and troubled for many things, but the primary thing, what I need more than any thing, is to rest and receive from Jesus. Then, I'll be able to serve "with the strength that God provides" (1 Peter 4).

Today's reading: Luke 9

I'm utterly arrested (as He no doubt intended) by Jesus' Word in verse 44, as He lays out His deadly destiny: "Let these words sink into your ears..." Jesus ain't playing: He wasn't then, He isn't now. It's too easy for any of us to bypass the cross on our way to the resurrection, but our Lord doesn't want us to miss this. May He make our ears fertile soil to receive His Word!

Today's reading: Luke 8

One Word that stands out to me in this chapter is patience (v. 15). The soil that bears fruit, Jesus says, is that which does so with patience, endurance, sticktuitiveness. That's not the most attention-grabbing virtue, but in the long game of the Lord's work it may be what's most necessary. For impatient people like me, this is a Word worth hearing and heeding!

Today's reading: Luke 7

It's hard to read past verse 15: "And the dead man sat up and began to speak." Well, that's different! I love how matter-of-fact it all is. The report doesn't come with melodrama whatsoever: this is simply the new reality of life under Jesus' reign and rule. I desire to have such a default—Lord, grant it!

What's your Word?

Dwell Richly, Day 49

Today's reading: Luke 6

I can't help but notice the "woe" of vv. 24-26, especially with Matthew's account of the Beatitudes still ringing in my ears from Sunday. To those blessings, there's a corresponding word of conviction, which all convey this message: don't get too comfortable. Blessing abounds for those who know their needs are met only in Jesus; woe betide the one who thinks he has it together!

What's your Word?

Dwell Richly, Day 48

Today's reading: Luke 5

I'm seized by Peter's reaction to the Lord's miraculous catch of fish in verse 8: "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" It makes me think of Isaiah in the temple (Isaiah 6) or St. John when he sees the vision of the glorified Jesus (Revelation 1). It's an apt reaction to the Lord's holiness. But Jesus' Word holds fast: "Don't be afraid!"

What's your Word?

Dwell Richly, Day 47

Today's reading: Luke 4

The Word of Christ that catches my attention today is at the end of the chapter: "Must" (v. 43). Jesus must preach the good news. He has a divine necessity. This Word obviously speaks very personally to me, because I feel the same way about preaching: it's not just something I can do or should do; it's something I must do! Lord, help me do so to the glory of your name!
