I can't help noticing, reading in our fraught times, the "division" that ensues in vv. 40-44. People were divided over Jesus then; they're divided over Him today. While we should never be needlessly divisive, neither can we be discouraged when division comes as a result of Jesus. But as we prayerfully sing in that great Advent hymn, "Bid Thou our sad divisions cease, and be for us the Prince of Peace"!
